Rancho Bernardo Commmunity Fire Recovery Update
Valerie Brown (phone: (858) 485-1292, fax (619)699-6612), Project Coordinator - ReBuilding RB Coalition, is working to get assistance to families in need after the fire. She needs to get current contact information for the affected families so she can deliver donated items to them. She would love to hear from any RB households that have lost their homes, have been displaced, or have been otherwise impacted. Valerie has access to a lot of resources including volunteers, some rental properties, gift certificates and donated items! Please feel free to contact her with needs or additional resources.
Any fire impacted household should register with FEMA.
========== REBUILDING ==========
- McMillin Realty, as a company, would like to offer the RB Floor Plans and property profiles (I think this includes neighborhood information, recorded deeds…) free to all 2007 Firestorm victims. If you need your floorplan, please contact the McMillin Realty office in Rancho Bernardo at (858) 487-2002 or call Lori Shannon at (619) 204-3517.
- If you need to put a dumpster or storage container on the street, permit applications are NOW (thanks to Brian Maienschein’s office and the Tutunjian Family!) available at the Rancho Bernardo Local Assistance Center (LAC) at the Rancho Bernardo Community Park.
- Samaritan’s Purse is offering no red tape clean-up assistance and equipment; information at Maranatha Chapel Fire Relief 2007.
- As we approach the rainy season, mudslides become a significant concern in fire-damaged areas, particularly on slopes. According to the Poway News Chieftain, free sand bags, gravel bags and straw rolls are being offered in the Rancho Bernardo Community Park on W. Bernardo Dr and in Poway in the Valle Verde Park parking lot just north of Espola on Valle Verde Rd., in the overflow parking lot of Lake Poway Rd approaching the lake, on Midland Rd. across from the train barn in Old Poway Park, and on Garden Rd across from the Elementary school. City officials are providing advice and assistance. Poway residents can call (858)668-4668. San Diego residents can visit www.sandiego.gov or call Erosion Control Assistance: (858) 485-1292, OR (858) 538-8129 (RB Recovery Center) or contactValerie Brown (phone: (858) 485-1292, fax (619)699-6612).
- Free Tree/Plant Debris pick up ~ Environmental Services will assist property owners in RB who were impacted by the fires, by picking up private tree and plant debris (only) that they pile up at curbside. The phone number to schedule pick-up is (858) 694-7000. For the county areas, the phone number to call for this type of assistance is 1-877-308-8111.
- A Westwood resident with twenty four years construction experience has offered her services to verify licensing (validity & in trade they are offering), verify workman’s compensation coverage, review contracts, and obtain certificates of insurance, for free. Please contact Valerie Brown (phone: (858) 485-1292, fax (619)699-6612) for more information.
- On December 2nd, some of the Scripps Ranch homeowners whose homes were rebuilt after the Cedar Fires will be opening their homes to those who lost their homes in the Witch Fire. For more information, please contact the Stonefield Rebuilding Center at 16959 Bernardo Center Drive, Ste. 100, (858) 487-4400.
- The Habitat for Humanity ReStore located at 10222 San Diego Mission Road is offering an additional 20% discount on already discounted building materials to families rebuilding. Please bring your FEMA card with you.
- Team Colby Homeowner Advocate’s website provides a lot of information on the rebuilding process.
========== INSURANCE =========
- United Policyholders (UP), a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that educates consumers about insurance issues, publishes of The Disaster Recovery Handbook and Personal Property Inventory Guide which is being distributed, free-of-charge, at the Cedar Fire Survivors Table at the RB Local Assistance Center.
- When you need to do a household inventory, it is almost impossible to remember everything you have in your house. Community Assisting REcovery website has a Personal Property Inventory Worksheet/Database to help remember the things you had in your house. You might be able to deduct loss in excess of what your insurance pays off your income taxes.
- “Insurance 101 for Fire Survivors” (Wednesday, November 28 7:00 pm- 8:30 pm) and “Legal Issues and Scope of Loss” (Wednesday, December 12, 7:00 pm- 9:00 pm) at the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church, located at 17010 Pomerado.
- “Insurance 101 for Fire Survivors”: The first half of the evening will include a presentation of important insurance recovery information. The second half of the evening will be spent in “breakout sessions” where all attendees will be organized by insurance carrier, so you will have an opportunity to meet and network with other Firestorm Survivors who have your same insurance carrier. A United Policyholders Disaster Recovery Mentor from each major insurance company will be present to help facilitate discussion for each group.
- Legal Issues: Underinsurance, Recorded Statements and Examinations Under Oath - Scheduled speaker: Richard Huver, Esq. Mr. Huver is a partner of the San Diego based law firm of Levine, Steinberg, Miller & Huver. His biography includes Outstanding Trial Lawyer Award, Consumer Attorneys of San Diego, 2000; President’s Award, Consumer Attorneys of California, 2001; President of the Year, Local Trial Lawyer Association, 2006. Insurance Law Editor, Trial Bar News, 1998 - current. Featured Author, Products Liability Advisory, a national publication. Mr. Huver has handled and is handling many of the underinsurance cases from the 2003 Cedar Fire.
Scopes of Loss: Understanding a scope of loss and preparation of an “independent” scope of loss - Scheduled speaker: Lou Farallo, forensic estimator for GAFCON Construction Management. Mr. Farallo is a Certified Professional Estimator and on the board of directors for the San Diego Society of Professional Estimators.
As with the 1st meeting, insurance company “breakout sessions” will follow the presentation, so attendees will have an opportunity to continue networking with other Firestorm Survivors who have their same insurance company.
========= CHILDCARE =========
- Families currently enrolled at the Westwood Club Preschool should contact Ellen Weinstein, the director, to take advantage of extended times and service on non-school days.
- Many Westwood families have volunteered to provide childcare. Until a location is secured, this would be between the two families, in the volunteer’s home. If interested, we can provide a list of volunteers and their respective “credentials.” Please contact Valerie Brown (phone: (858) 485-1292, fax (619)699-6612) if you have a need. The Parks & Recreation option at Glassman Center is no longer available, so we will work on providing an alternative for our residents.
- Don’t forget about the Westwood Club Holiday Minicamps. For (must pre-pay) $5 per day, WWC members, ages 6-12, can register for December 26, 27, and/or January 2,3 12:00pm- 5:00pm mini-camps at the Westwood Club. For Question, please contact Nora, 618-1220.
======= NOTICES =======
- San Diego Fire Station 33, in Rancho Bernardo, is in need of an EXTREME HOME MAKEOVER. It was built almost 40 years ago for a 3-man crew and one engine. Now the station inadequately accommodates 6 men and women and a fire engine, a brush truck, AND an ambulance. 30 years of deferred maintenance have left the station in terrible disrepair. A RB Family made a video that KNSD featured, asking EXTREME HOME MAKEOVER to makeover our fire station. We would like to start a letter writing campaign to ABC asking them to help our community rebuild by supporting our RB firefighters. If you are interested in writing a letter, please address it to: Lock & Key Productions c/o Family Casting P.O. BOX 38670 Los Angeles, CA. 90038 Please feel free to ask any of your friends or family to join our campaign!
- If you or your business is able to hand deliver or mail newsletters to RB households, please contact Valerie Brown (phone: (858) 485-1292, fax (619)699-6612).
