Fireproofing Your Home

The Poway City Council received a report this week regarding new building codes for buildings that are in “interface areas” (i.e., high fire risk . . .). There was a presentation done on fireproofing your homes by Firefighter Kevin (LOVE HIM!!). It is now available on the city’s website at poway.org: It’s located under “Wildfire Information” and then under the Wildland Urban Interface Section (scroll down a bit). It’s titled “Wildland Urban Interface – Fireproofing Your Home”
I would suggest that everyone look at this and consider. A huge problem with homes is that the embers get in under the eaves and in the vent and go the attic and the house burns down…. And those embers were traveling a mile or more in the high winds . . . Also, I’m rethinking all the bark chips I have in my landscaping. Firefighter Joe (LOVE HIM!!!) told me that the embers would land in these and smolder and burst into flames after long periods of time. Hmmmm….I’m thinking of getting rid of them entirely. Also, the type of trees and bushes we plant can have a huge impact. It’s a good time to really review our homes and make them as fireproof as possible.
You can get more information on the internet or directly from the Fire Department. Hope this helps!
